Transitory termination can be a good thing
By Ivor Griffiths
Transitory termination can be a good thing

fountains kaleidoscope skyward
human canon ball flies,
rips through haze, dry ice rising, filling ceiling space
to cushion the tightrope walker who trips
frantically clawing the wire, her legs
thrashing popcorn singed air,
the snap echoing round a cadaverous crowd, her head
hit the ground, she might live they said.
Sit and fidget for five, stand and leave, sombre for a while
walk the mile and ride the Whirlwind,
speed air joy a spinning blur,
feeling lucky, looking forward hoping, hearing the steam of
rides hissing, loafing and laughing, later getting drunk.
